Skilled hiring activity strengthens

Online job ads for skilled positions increased 2.3% in March, according to the Department of Employment's monthly vacancy index.

A total 61,345 skilled positions were advertised, up 10.3% on this time last year, on a seasonally adjusted basis.

Ad levels for both skilled and unskilled roles increased 1.9% between February and March and surged 9% year-on-year to a total of 158,189.

Seven of eight occupational groups experienced increased demand in March, led by ads for machinery operators and drivers (up by 5.1%).

On a trend basis, total vacancies nudged up 0.4% to 157,562, while skilled job ads firmed 0.7% to 61,068.
